Frequently Asked Questions

Folded leaflets pack more content into a smaller footprint, making them ideal for brochures, menus, and detailed marketing. This FAQ covers fold types, when to use them, and design pitfalls.

The most common are half-fold (single crease), tri-fold (two creases, also called letter fold), Z-fold (zigzag pattern), gate-fold (folds inward to a centre opening), and roll-fold (each panel rolls into the next). Each suits different content layouts.
Both have 6 panels. A tri-fold (or letter fold) folds inward in the same direction, so the first panel is hidden under the second. A Z-fold has alternating creases, giving an open zigzag shape. Z-folds reveal panels sequentially as you unfold.
Gate-folds are dramatic, when opened, the two outer panels open like doors to reveal a large central spread. Use them for high-impact reveals: product launches, premium brochures, art and design content. Avoid for everyday marketing where the drama would feel overdone.
A roll-fold leaflet has each panel slightly narrower than the previous, so they tuck into each other like a scroll. It works well for sequential content, step-by-step instructions, story-based marketing, or progressive reveal of information.

When you have more content than fits on a flat A5 or DL, but not enough to justify a stitched booklet. Folded leaflets are perfect for tri-fold takeaway menus, product info sheets, service brochures, and event programmes.
For content under 8 panels, folded leaflets are cheaper and faster to produce. Above 8 panels, a saddle-stitched booklet becomes easier to read and more durable. The break-point depends on your content volume.

Plan content panel by panel rather than as a continuous spread. Each panel needs to make sense on its own and lead the reader to the next. Use the front panel for hook and brand, inside panels for detail, and the back panel for contact and call-to-action.
Keep logos, faces, and critical text away from fold creases. Folds compress a small strip of print, and folding shifts panels by 1–2mm, both of which can spoil content positioned right on the line. Allow 5–10mm of safe zone either side of each fold.

100–150gsm folds cleanly on most paper types. Above 170gsm, paper can crack at the fold and may need scoring (a pre-creased line) before folding.
Heavy paper folded without scoring will crack the printed coating, particularly on dark backgrounds. Scoring (creating a pre-cut groove for the fold) prevents this. Always specify scoring for paper above 170gsm.
Standard turnaround is 4–6 working days, including the extra folding stage. Tri-fold and Z-fold are usually the fastest fold options. Gate-folds and roll-folds may take an extra day due to more complex finishing setups.
